What is the council doing?

Ealing Council is committed to improving local air quality and has focused on a number of key areas to reduce harmful emissions and clean up our air.

Making the switch to cleaner and electric vehicles

The council has been encouraging residents to switch to less polluting vehicles by implementing 100% emissions-based permit parking. Charges are based on CO2 emissions, fuel type and number of cars in a household. Further information at: Resident parking permit prices | Ealing Council.

The council has also been installing electric vehicle (EV) charging points across the borough. With 670 EV charging points already achieved in December 2023, we are committed to installing 2000 charging points by 2026.

Choose cycling

We implemented a 20mph speed limit on borough roads to improve road safety and make walking and cycling more accessible. We are also creating new cycle lanes, including the new segregated cycle tracks in Greenford and Northholt. The council is also taking forward the next phase of our plans for a cycle lane on Uxbridge Road, running right through the centre of the borough, which helps people to consider walking and cycling.

The council's Let’s Go Southall programme encourages residents to consider sustainable modes of travel, such as cycling, by giving away 623 free bikes (1200 by July 2024) to residents in Southall.

Dr Bike

Our regular Dr Bike maintenance and cycle training offers free bike safety checks and training to increase people’s confidence in cycling.

The council has also been helping residents to switch to cargo bikes, human powered bikes designed and constructed specifically for transporting loads, by running a scheme for residents to try out a cargo bike for 2 weeks.

Safe and affordable bike parking

We are providing safe and affordable bike storage with bike hangars in locations suggested by residents.

With 96 bike hangars in December 2023, they are set to reach 150 by 2026. At just 70p per month, find out more about parking your bike in London’s cheapest bike hangars.

No to idling and yes to clean air

We have ramped up fines for unnecessary idling to the legal maximum of £80. Signs have been installed at borough entry points alerting drivers to our zero tolerance approach. In line with the legal requirements, our enforcement officers ask motorists running their engine when the vehicle is not in motion to switch off. If they don't comply, we fine them the maximum amount.

Report unnecessary idling on 0208 825 6677, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Choose option one and leave a voicemail message with the location and vehicle description. At all other times, call 0208 825 5000. You can make an enforcement request using the LoveCleanStreets app by selecting the parking and idling option.
